Back-to-School Season Is the Perfect Time for a Bookkeeping Reset (Here’s Why)
If you’re a mom and a business owner, you know how quickly summer can turn into a blur.
One minute you’re packing lunches for camp, answering client messages from the car, and trying to squeeze in work between family plans. The next, you’re standing in the school supply aisle wondering how it’s already time for another school year.
And while back-to-school season usually means new backpacks, fresh notebooks, and getting everyone back on a routine, there’s another reset that deserves a spot on your list:
Your bookkeeping.
I know. Not nearly as exciting as buying those adorable new sneakers.
But hear me out.
Back-to-school season can actually be the perfect time to take a step back, look at your business finances, and get your books back into a rhythm before the final stretch of the year.
Summer Is Busy. Your Books Probably Feel It.
Let’s be honest. When you’re a busy mom running a business, something has to give during the summer.
Maybe your bookkeeping has been pushed off because you were busy serving clients.
Maybe you have a pile of receipts sitting in your inbox.
Maybe your QuickBooks account has been open in a browser tab for approximately three months… but you haven't actually logged in.
Or maybe you’re not even sure what your business made this year because your income is coming in at different times and your expenses seem to disappear as quickly as they arrive.
You’re not alone.
The problem is that putting off your bookkeeping doesn’t make the work disappear. It usually just makes the eventual cleanup feel much more overwhelming.
And for realtors and service-based business owners with fluctuating income, staying current matters. Your financial records can help you understand cash flow, profitability, expenses, and where your business actually stands.
A Fresh School Year = A Fresh Financial Routine
There’s something about September that makes everyone want to get organized.
New schedules.
New routines.
New goals.
So why not use that same energy for your business?
Instead of waiting until January to look at your numbers, use the beginning of the school year as your personal business financial reset.
You don't need to spend an entire weekend buried in QuickBooks.
You just need to start with the basics.
1. Make Sure Your Books Are Caught Up
First things first: Where are you right now?
Are all of your bank and credit card accounts reconciled?
Are transactions categorized?
Are there months sitting unfinished in QuickBooks?
Do you have income that hasn't been properly recorded?
If you're behind, don't beat yourself up. Seriously.
The goal isn't to feel guilty about what hasn't been done. The goal is to figure out where you are and decide what needs to happen next.
If you've fallen several months behind, a bookkeeping catch-up may be the best place to start.
2. Look at Your Numbers Before the Year Gets Away From You
This is one of my favorite reasons to do a back-to-school bookkeeping reset.
You still have time to make decisions.
When your books are current, your financial reports can tell you what's actually happening in your business—not what you think is happening.
Look at your:
Revenue
Expenses
Profit
Cash flow
Tax savings
Owner pay
For realtors especially, income can be unpredictable. One month might bring a big commission check while the next is much quieter.
That makes it even more important to understand your numbers instead of simply looking at your bank balance and hoping for the best.
Your books should help you answer questions like:
Am I actually profitable?
Can I afford to invest in my business?
Am I paying myself consistently?
Am I saving enough for taxes?
Where is my money actually going?
Those are much more useful questions than, “Did I categorize that $47 transaction yet?”
3. Clean Up Your Business Expenses
Back-to-school is also a great time to make sure your expenses are organized.
Take a look at recurring subscriptions, software, advertising, mileage, supplies, professional services, and other business expenses.
Are you still paying for subscriptions you don't use?
Are business expenses accidentally being mixed with personal purchases?
Are receipts and supporting documents organized?
Small things can add up quickly when they're left unchecked.
A consistent bookkeeping routine—recording transactions, categorizing them, reconciling accounts, and reviewing reports—helps keep your financial picture accurate throughout the year.
4. Give Yourself a Tax-Time Head Start
I know we're talking about back-to-school—not tax season.
But that's exactly the point.
Tax season is coming whether we're ready for it or not.
The best time to prepare for tax season isn't when your CPA emails asking for your financials. It's throughout the year.
When your books are maintained monthly, tax preparation becomes much less of a frantic January or March project. For business owners with fluctuating income, staying current also gives you a better picture of what you've earned and what you've spent before tax deadlines arrive.
Imagine getting to tax season and thinking:
"Oh. We're actually ready."
Wouldn't that be nice?
5. Create a Routine You Can Actually Maintain
Here's the biggest thing I want you to take away:
Your bookkeeping doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to be consistent.
And as a busy mom, your routine needs to fit your actual life—not some imaginary version of your life where you have two uninterrupted hours every Friday afternoon.
Maybe it's a monthly financial review.
Maybe it's handing the bookkeeping off completely.
Maybe it's finally hiring a bookkeeper so "do the books" can come off your never-ending mental load.
There is no prize for doing everything yourself.
Sometimes the smartest business decision is recognizing that your time is better spent serving clients, growing your business, and being present with your family.
Your Back-to-School Business Reset Starts Here
So while you're buying pencils, labeling water bottles, and trying to remember which child needs PE sneakers on Monday…
Take a few minutes to check in with your business finances, too.
Ask yourself:
Are my books current?
Do I know what my business is actually making?
Am I confident in my numbers?
Do I know what I need to save for taxes?
Is bookkeeping taking up more of my time and mental energy than it should?
If your answer to that last one is yes, it might be time to take bookkeeping off your plate.
